Accessible Derby Events for 2017

I love the Kentucky Derby, which is not shocking, since I live in Louisville Kentucky.  Many times the events that lead to the Derby are even more enjoyable than the Kentucky Derby itself.  Louisville Kentucky becomes a town of events, parades, races, Southern Food, and lots of activities during this time.  Here are some of the more “accessible” and easy to manage events.

  1.  Thunder Over Louisville, at the baseball stadium.  Regardless of the weather many people are intent on attending Thunder Over Louisville.  This is an all day event that includes an amazing air show, a baseball game or two, lots of food trucks, and the largest fireworks show in the USA.  Plan early if you want a seat.  Bonus is the baseball stadium has real restrooms, a covered area, and actual seat or chair.
  2. The Balloon Glow is a wonderful evening event before the official balloon race.  This occurs on Friday night, and is a great time to talk to our Balloonist, and enjoy the wonderful colors of the evening.  This event is particularly kid friendly, as is held in a football field.
  3. Do you like to BOUNCE?  Check out the KDF BATTLE OF THE BOUNCE  The Kentucky and Indiana Stroke Ass0sciation and Coventry Care are raising funds and having a fun event.  This is a great race involving teams climbing walls, running in a hamster wheel, hopping on horses and more.  The teams get dressed up, and compete.  Great event to watch on the great lawn.
  4. Pink Parade on Kentucky Oaks Day.  This event happens at Churchill Downs.  On the “Ladies Day” of racing.  Before the Fillies run around the track a special group of Breast Cancer Survivors walk in the Pink Parade wearing PINK

Whatever you do plan ahead on parking, bring lots of water, and ENJOY THE KENTUCKY DERBY FESTIVAL
